Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, in cooperation with the InArtis and Kült, hosts one of the 20th century’s most important artists and representative of the Surrealist movement Salvador Dali with 121 works consisting of "Divine Comedy" print series, Surrealism Years series and Gala series.

The exhibition can be viewed between December 23, 2011 and February 26, 2012.

Divine Comedy

The Salvador Dali print series Divine Comedy originates in plans by the Italian government to honor the 700th birthday of the Italian poet Dante Alighiere in the beginning of 50's. Although the project was later dropped in Italy, Dali strove to see its completion. In the late 1950s Dali met the French publisher, Joseph Foret, who had issue Dali's series of lithographs for Cervantes's Don Quixote in 1957-1958. After viewing a group of the watercolors for The Divine Comedy at Dali's studio, Foret enthusiastically set out to find support for the creation of The Divine Comedy.
The series consists of 100 prints - one print for each canto plus one cover print. The prints were produced as wood engravings in the years 1959 to 1963 in Paris, commissioned by Joseph Foret. For the series of the Divine Comedy 3,500 blocks were carved by two professional carvers.

 From Konstantiniyye to Istanbul

Photographs of the Anatolian Shore of the Bosphorus
from the mid XIXth Century to XX Century
21 January – 1 April 2012

The exhibition is comprised of the works by photography masters who practiced their art in Istanbul from the end of the XIXth to the early years of the XXth century. It is a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photograph Collection and from private collections, revealing the magnificent structures, the daily life and the intriguing personalities of an Istanbul of the past. Istanbul has evolved into an industrial city and an enormous metropolis: its silhouette, architecture, vehicles, bridges, quays, streets and public spaces have attained an entirely different appearance. Masters such as Ali Sami Aközer, Félice Beato, Guillame Berggren, Abdullah Biraderler, Gülmez Biraderler,Ernest Edouard de Caranza, Sebah&Joaillier, Maurice Meys, Ali Enis Oza, James Robertson and Elisa Pante Zonaro not only document the nostalgic images of the city during their time, but also will be taking us along a pleasant journey through photographs taken with the difficult and onerous techniques of the time.

 Thursday, 23 February Time: 20.00

Back in Washington, Williams played with Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Williams, Woodie Shaw, Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson, John Hicks, Larry Willis, Mulgrew Miller and many others. He joined Gary Thomas' band, with whom he recorded one of his first compositions, "Pads".

Then he joined Shirley Horn, who would keep for twenty-five years the same rhythm section: Charles Ables (bass) and Steve Williams (drums). Critic Don Heckman wrote in the Los Angeles Times (February 2, 1995) about "the importance of bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams to the Horn's sound. Working with boundless subtlety, following her every spontaneous twist and turn, they were the ideal accompanists for a performer who clearly will tolerate nothing less than perfection".

His music relationship with the pianist and singer gives him the opportunity to tour the world and record with such artists as Toots Thielemans, Branford Marsalis and Wynton Marsalis, Carmen McRae, Roy Hargrove and Miles Davis...

After his long collaboration with Shirley Horn, Williams moved back to New York in 2006, where he studied with Michael Carvin. He performs among others with the Slagle/Stryker Band, Paul Bollenbach, Roni Ben Hur, Larry Willis, the John Hicks Legacy Band, Bill Saxton, Bob Mover, Sara Lazarus, Ben Vereen, Joe Lovano, Eddie Henderson...

Famous for his refinement with Shirley Horn, he is also appreciated as a powerful and sensitive instrumentalist favoring the musical conversation. He pursues his music career with his own quintet, promoting original compositions by the band members. The quintet is internationally performing since 2206. Steve's first album as the leader "New Incentive" is released in January 2007 with Olivier Hutman (p), Michael Bowie (b), Donvonte McCoy (t), and Antoine Roney (s). John Hicks, Gary Bartz and Roy Hargrove are guests. The press welcome this debut as a leader with great enthusiasm.
